According to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), on 22 December 2022, the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food informed WOAH of an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza in Spain.

According to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), on 22 December 2022, Spain's Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food informed WOAH of an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza in Spain.
The outbreak was confirmed on 20 December 2022 in the province of Valladolid in the autonomous region of Castilla-Leon. The source of the outbreak is contact with wild species. Laboratory tests found 1487 birds suspected of infection, of which 800 became ill, 705 died and 782 were killed and disposed of.

As the outbreak continues, the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food will submit weekly follow-up reports.
