Highly pathogenic avian influenza of the H5N1 subtype was identified in Valparaíso, Chile

According to the latest report from the Chilean Agriculture and Livestock Service (SAG), the Valparaíso Region (R. de Valparaíso) A white pelican was found on the coast of Tunquén infected with the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus of the H5N1 subtype.

Chile's ADN radio reported on January 1 that the news confirmed that H5N1 continues to move towards southern Chile using wild birds as a carrier, fortunately it has not yet affected free-range or industrialized poultry. Chile's deputy agriculture minister, José Guajardo, among others, confirmed the news.

Considering the spread of H5N1 to a predominantly poultry-producing area, the SAG raised the alert level and increased surveillance, especially in the field of poultry farming, and called on poultry owners to take effective biosecurity measures to avoid contact between farmed birds and wild birds.

Recently, dead or sick birds have been reported from all over Chile, and the SAG is calling on the public not to touch or move them, but to wait for professionals to deal with them to avoid the spread of the disease. SAG staff review each case on a case-by-case basis to determine whether reported dead birds qualify for bird flu deaths.
