LANXESS and Total Energy reached sustainable styrene cooperation

ECHEMI 2023-01-30

On January 16, LANXESS announced a cooperation with Total Energy on the supply of bio-recycled styrene.

According to reports, the raw materials used for the styrene supplied by Total Energy to Lanxess will be based on tall oil. Tall oil is derived from a resin that is a by-product of pulp production. LANXESS produces sustainable ion exchange resins from styrene supplied by Total Energy. These ion exchange resins are widely used in various industries, such as chemical process treatment, food purification and wastewater treatment. According to LANXESS, the sustainable origin of the styrene is certified according to the mass balance method of the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS standard.

Marcel Beermann, Head of Global Procurement Logistics, LANXESS Group Function: "Our customers are increasingly demanding sustainable solutions, and raw materials with a low carbon We can further expand the corresponding product line for customers.”

In addition to styrene, LANXESS also procures many other sustainable counterparts of fossil raw materials. Lanxess uses biocycling acrylonitrile for the production of another ion exchange resin, the preservative uses a mixture of various fatty acids based on sunflower oil, the composite material Tepex Scopeblue is manufactured based on flax and polylactic acid, etc.
