BASF Unveils Sustainable Solutions at SEPAWA Congress 2023
Natural O/W Emulsifier for Conscious Personal Care Formulations
At the SEPAWA Congress in Berlin, October 25-27, BASF presented the company’s latest solutions for the home care and industrial & institutional (I&I) cleaning and personal care markets.

The new versatile OW emulsifier
These offers are part of BASF’s Care Chemicals Initiative Care 360° – Solutions for Sustainable Life, the division’s cross-business and holistic approach to cover all topics impacting the future of key markets and industries: sustainability, digitalization, innovation, and new approaches to working together.
BASF shared booths 137-139, 154-155, 142, and 151-152 with its European sales organization, BTC Europe.
In an era where consumers increasingly seek mindful consumption, influencing their well-being and skin health, the demand for natural products continues to grow. BASF acknowledges this trend and addresses it with their latest offering.
Emulgade® Verde 10 MS, introduced by BASF, marks an expansion of their polyglyceryl fatty acid ester technology, catering to the evolving market needs for sustainability. This versatile O/W emulsifier boasts exceptional sustainability credentials and performance. Made entirely from renewable feedstocks, it is readily biodegradable and meets the COSMOS standard. Emulgade® Verde 10 MS is also preservative-free, crafted through an environmentally conscious, solvent-free process.
This emulsifier's adaptability shines, providing excellent stability in O/W creams and lotions, while seamlessly blending with various cosmetic ingredients, whether synthetic or biopolymers. It finds utility across a spectrum of cosmetic formulations, offering shear-thinning behavior and facilitating even skin distribution. Dermatological tests affirm its suitability for sensitive skin, making it conducive for microbiome-friendly concepts.
Digital Transparency on Sustainability
Adapting traditional ingredients to fulfill today's demand for sustainability remains a challenge. While direct replacements are scarce, rethinking and reimagining formulations are essential.
To address this, BASF integrates Product Carbon Footprints (PCF) into their digital service, D'lite, enabling customers to gauge the greenhouse gas emissions associated with their BASF product purchases. This proprietary solution calculates cradle-to-gate PCF, measuring emissions from resource extraction to BASF's factory gate, adhering to the ISO 14067:2018 standard. This offers valuable insights into environmental impact.
D'lite extends its support by providing customers with sustainability labels, aiding them in designing formulations in line with their chosen label. It includes certifications such as EU Ecolabel, COSMOS, and NATRUE. Continuously evolving, the digital service stays aligned with the latest sustainability trends.
Streamlining Sustainable Formulation
In response to heightened customer demands for sustainable solutions, BASF's Personal Care unit is diligently expanding its sustainable portfolio. Dr. Becky Stiles, Head of Applied Sustainability, EU & APAC, Care Chemicals at BASF, emphasized the unit's commitment to driving sustainable innovation. The digital service, D'lite, simplifies laboratory work, saves time, and equips formulators with the tools they need to create sustainable products efficiently.
BASF also contributed lectures to the 'Forum for Innovations,' 'European Detergents Conference,' and the 'Scientific Conference,' aligning with their dedication to shaping a more sustainable future in the personal care industry.
