L’Oréal recalls Mizani conditioner over contamination fears

In a proactive move, L’Oréal USA has initiated the voluntary recall of its Mizani 25 Miracle Cream Leave-in Conditioner, expressing concerns about potential contamination. The recall, affecting 487 units packaged in 250ml plastic tubes, is attributed to the possible presence of Burkholderia cepacia complex, a group of bacteria that, while generally posing minimal risk to healthy individuals, can lead to respiratory infections in those with compromised immune systems or chronic lung conditions. Notably, these bacteria are often resistant to common antibiotics.

The specific units subject to the recall are categorized under Lot No. 48U401, Product No. P1895800, and bear the Recall Number F-0467-2024, as outlined in a report by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

Mizani, a brand specializing in professional products for wavy, curly, and coily hair, became part of the L’Oréal USA portfolio following the beauty giant’s acquisition of Carson Products in 2000.

The Mizani 25 Miracle Cream Leave-in Conditioner, the product in question, features a formulation enriched with fennel seed oil and coconut oil, aiming to provide effective detangling and hydration for hair.

This incident adds to a series of recalls within the cosmetics industry associated with bacterial contamination. In the past year, Kao USA recalled specific lots of Jergens Ultra Healing Moisturizer due to the potential presence of Pluralibacter gergoviae, a bacterial species. Henkel also took voluntary action, withdrawing 180 bottles of its Alterna Bond Repair Leave-in Heat Protection Spray in 2022 due to the risk of B. cepacia contamination.

Notably, just this month, Johnson & Johnson proactively recalled 7,800 bottles of Clean & Clear’s Morning Burst Facial Cleanser at the wholesale level due to microbial contamination concerns.
