Evonik announces expansion of U.S. silica plant

ECHEMI 2024-02-26

Recently, Evonik announced that it will expand its precipitated silica plant in Charleston, South Carolina, USA. The construction of the new production line is planned to start in mid-2024 and be put into operation in early 2026. By then, the production capacity will be expanded by 50%.

According to reports, precipitated silica is a key ingredient in products such as energy-saving tires, toothpaste and coatings. Maike Schuh, Evonik's chief financial officer for the Americas, said: "North America is an important strategic growth region for us, and with our investment in Charleston, we are strengthening our customer-centric strategy and improving our sustainability position. Evonik is investing in innovative and green solutions and technologies to provide customers with outstanding sustainability benefits."

Evonik has also laid out a clear roadmap to carbon neutrality for its Charleston plant. Evonik has 18 precipitated silica production bases around the world. Precipitated silica brands include ULTRASIL, ZEODENT and SIPERNAT, which are used for different purposes.
