Kuraray to acquire industrial activated carbon business from Sprint Environmental Services
Kuraray has decided that its U.S. subsidiary Calgon Carbon Corporation will acquire the industrial recycled carbon business from Sprint Environmental Services.
In 2018, Kuraray acquired Calgon Carbon, the world's largest activated carbon manufacturer, and now has a wide range of activated carbon products, such as bituminous coal-based, wood-based, coconut-based and reactivation services. As a total solution provider for water and air purification, it is expanding its activated carbon business to contribute to improving the natural and living environment.
In the activated carbon business, the U.S. industrial activated carbon market is expected to grow significantly. In order to maintain or expand a company's market share, increasing production capacity is crucial.
Currently, Calgon Carbon's industrial activated carbon production facilities are concentrated in the eastern United States, but through this acquisition, Calgon Carbon will be able to gain an important strategic base in the Gulf of Mexico region and cover the Midwest region.
Following the acquisition, the company hopes to expand its reactivated carbon facilities not only for industrial applications but also for drinking water at various sites including this one. With demand expected to increase significantly due to tighter PFAS regulations in the United States, Calgon Carbon is looking into significantly increasing production capacity and meeting contractual commitments with key customers.
