Clariant Catalysts and KBR Collaborate to Advance Low-Carbon Ammonia Production

Clariant, a specialty chemicals company focused on sustainability, announces the expansion of its strategic collaboration with KBR in ammonia production. Ammonia plays a vital role in food production today and will become even more important as a clean energy source in the future. The partners will continue to collaborate on traditional ammonia projects while significantly increasing their focus on low-carbon and carbon-free “green ammonia” applications.

The solution combines Clariant’s superior AmoMax ammonia synthesis catalyst with KBR’s K-GreeN ammonia technology to maximize the economics and energy efficiency of ammonia production. KBR is a leading ammonia process supplier with more than 75 years of licensing and design experience and more than 250 ammonia plants worldwide. Clariant provides catalysts best suited for optimal performance in KBR-licensed ammonia plants.

To produce carbon-free green ammonia, KBR's K-GreeN technology is combined with Clariant's AmoMax 10 Plus catalyst to convert green hydrogen with nitrogen in air separation units. The catalyst's enhanced activity supports maximizing ammonia yield and energy efficiency, while its enhanced stability ensures reliable performance despite the typically fluctuating renewable energy supply. The partners' complete green ammonia solution has been selected for 10 prominent green ammonia projects around the world. The expanded collaboration between Clariant and KBR will help accelerate the sustainable energy transition.
