Germany's pharmaceutical strategy continues to be effective: Sanofi will invest 1.3 billion euros to produce insulin
On August 4, Sanofi officially announced its investment plan in Frankfurt, Germany: the French pharmaceutical company will invest about 1.3 billion euros by 2029 to build a modern insulin production facility at the BioCampus in Frankfurt Hoechst.
The high-tech insulin plant is expected to be operational in 2029 and will employ hundreds of experts.
The Frankfurt-Hoechst plant is one of Sanofi's largest plants, with about 6,600 employees, of which about 4,000 are directly or indirectly involved in insulin production. Sanofi's diabetes drug Lantus, which has achieved annual sales of billions of dollars, is produced in Hoechst.
Brendan O'Callaghan, global head of manufacturing and supply at Sanofi, said: "With this project, we reaffirm our commitment to helping people with diabetes around the world. We are leveraging the long-standing expertise of the Frankfurt Biocampus and its highly qualified people."
Heidrun Irschik-Hadjieff, chairman of Sanofi Germany, added: "Our planned investment highlights the central role that the Frankfurt Biocampus plays in strengthening the resilience of global insulin production. The strong support from the German federal and local governments is a strong signal for the biopharmaceutical industry."
Sanofi said the project will be implemented with the support of the German national government and the Hesse state government, subject to EU approval.
