Merck and Siemens Collaborate on Smart Manufacturing

ECHEMI 2024-09-20

Merck and Siemens recently deepened their collaboration to take smart manufacturing to the next level. Cedrik Neike, CEO Digital Industries and member of the Siemens Executive Board, and Kai Beckmann, member of the Merck Executive Board and CEO of Electronics, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to expand cooperation in the field of smart manufacturing and outline the next steps for both companies.

The MoU makes Siemens a preferred global supplier and strategic partner for smart manufacturing technologies, paving the way for transformation projects across Merck’s three business units.

“Healthcare, Life Sciences and Electronics are at the core of improving lives and creating a more sustainable future. By combining Merck’s expertise in these important areas with Siemens’ cutting-edge hardware and software, we are moving from large-scale production concepts to a modular approach that saves time and increases flexibility. With the signing of the MoU, we now aim to set new global standards for future production,” said Cedrik Neike. “Our collaboration spans more than 145 years and is a powerful reminder that Merck and Siemens are more than just partners – we are long-term allies in shaping the future.”

“Our goal is to bring new products to market faster and more cost-effectively, with a strong focus on sustainability. Smart manufacturing is essential to achieving this goal, and Siemens is the perfect partner for this journey. Their deep expertise and century-long familiarity with Merck enable them to rapidly implement and scale our vision.”

Merck is driving an ambitious digital transformation with a focus on smart manufacturing. The MoU introduces a centralized management and a fast-track collaboration framework, opening up new business opportunities. At the heart of this is the Siemens Xcelerator platform, which offers advanced software and hardware solutions. Key to the initiative is modular production based on the plug-and-play principle, which reduces time to market, costs and CO2 emissions. The collaboration aims to drive innovation, reduce complexity and foster growth for both companies.

One of Merck’s recent successes is a GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) modular production line based on the MTP (module type package) automation standard. This ensures that the facility meets the highest quality and safety standards, safeguarding patient health and reinforcing Merck’s commitment to excellence. Currently, Merck is using this technology for pharmaceutical and chemical production, but it can be applied to a variety of manufacturing industries.
