Syensqo Launches First Fluoropolymer Based on Non-Fluorinated Surfactant Technology

ECHEMI 2024-11-22

Syensqo, a science-based company focused on developing breakthrough solutions to support customers’ sustainability goals, has launched Aquivion N+ 125D, a fluoropolymer produced using Syensqo’s proprietary new NFS (Non-Fluorinated Surfactant) technology. The new grade is available globally and is intended for use in select hydrogen-related applications.

The launch of Aquivion N+ 125D is in line with the company’s One Planet sustainability roadmap and represents the next step in Syensqo’s ongoing efforts to voluntarily phase out the use of fluorosurfactants from the PFAS family of chemicals. This commitment, announced in 2022, includes transitioning to non-fluorinated surfactant technology across all our product lines and producing fluoropolymers that are virtually 100% fluorinated surfactant-free by 2026.

Mike Finelli, Syensqo’s Chief Technology Officer, said: “We are proud to continue transitioning our products to non-fluorinated surfactant technology. This achievement stems from our intensified research and innovation efforts in recent years, which has enabled us to commit to phasing out the use of fluorinated surfactants. This is particularly important as we aim to strengthen the role of our essential materials in the emerging hydrogen economy and the journey to sustainability.

Syensqo’s Green Hydrogen Growth Platform, launched in 2021, offers material solutions across the entire value chain from green hydrogen production to use, with the goal of driving the development of a green hydrogen economy. The platform brings together Syensqo’s advanced materials and capabilities to develop innovative solutions focused on improving system durability, efficiency and total cost of ownership. Aquivion N+ is the new brand name for the company’s range of fluorinated ionomers.

As the green hydrogen economy develops, the platform will continue to work with customers and key industry players to enable the energy transition.
