42-Year-Old Chinese Scientist Bob Li Appointed New Head of Oncology at AstraZeneca
Recently, AstraZeneca announced a significant personnel adjustment on its official website, appointing Bob Li, an Asian scientist from the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) in the U.S., as the new head of global medical affairs in oncology. He will report directly to David Fredrickson, the head of AstraZeneca's oncology business unit.
Despite being only 42 years old and not yet in the company's senior management, Li's Chinese identity and background have garnered widespread attention. Born in Shanghai and an Australian citizen, Li has served as a physician ambassador for China and the Asia-Pacific region at MSK, and he is also a senior researcher at the Asia Society Policy Institute's China Center for Global Public Health.
Li's career indicates that he has established collaborations with several medical organizations in China, including a project collaboration between MSK and the Chinese Thoracic Oncology Research Group. Thoracic oncology is a key area of AstraZeneca's drug development.
Since Pascal Soriot became CEO of AstraZeneca in 2012, the company's strategic focus has shifted prominently to oncology, and recent performance has confirmed the correctness of this strategy. In the third quarter of this year, AstraZeneca's oncology drug sales increased by 21% to $5.6 billion, accounting for over 40% of total revenue. In China, oncology drugs have also generated significant revenue for AstraZeneca, including two important cancer medications, Tagrisso and Enhertu.
On November 28, Enhertu was included in China's new national medical insurance catalog. This novel antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) is primarily used for HER2-positive breast cancer patients. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer's 2022 data, breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in China, second only to lung cancer. AstraZeneca states that about one in five breast cancer patients is considered HER2-positive.
Although AstraZeneca's website did not elaborate on the specific responsibilities of the "Global Medical Affairs" position, it is understood that a similar position exists in the U.S. Li aims to "help AstraZeneca redefine the future of cancer treatment" in this role.
China is AstraZeneca's second-largest market globally, next to the U.S., accounting for approximately 13% of its total sales. AstraZeneca has invested heavily in China and emphasized cooperation with local medical institutions and supply chains. However, AstraZeneca's business in China currently faces severe challenges due to a long-standing investigation into insurance fraud involving hundreds of employees and multiple current and former executives in the oncology business. The investigation involving the president of AstraZeneca China, Wang Lei, has been ongoing for nearly a month, but the company has not disclosed further information. This has also impacted AstraZeneca's stock price, which has fallen nearly 10% over the past month.
Industry analysts indicated that Wang was a crucial "bridge" between AstraZeneca's global leadership and the Chinese market. As Wang's situation remains unclear, AstraZeneca needs to find strategic talent capable of providing insights into the Chinese market, and Li's close ties to China played a significant role in this appointment.
Currently, Wang Lei's name still appears on AstraZeneca's global management list. His biography mentions that "Wang is responsible for promoting sustainable development strategies across international regions, including China. Under his leadership, China has become AstraZeneca's second-largest market, and AstraZeneca has become the largest pharmaceutical company in China."
