Lubrizol taps its clay-like biotech ingredient to help acne-prone skin

Lubrizol announced new clinical study results demonstrating the benefits of Uniclay, a biotech ingredient that mimics the effects of clay, for flushing acne-prone skin.

Made from a microorganism found in clay from Spain’s Aiguamolls de l’Emporda Natural Park, the Uniclay biotech ingredient was launched as a skin beauty in 2019. Mimicking the effects of clay on the skin, it helps achieve clearer, smoother, more beautiful skin. In 2022, Lubrizol Life Science Beauty (LLS Beauty) also tested its benefits for self-esteem and well-being.

Lubrizol recently announced results from a clinical study that expands the interest in natural ingredients into the facial cleansing space.

The study showed that a facial cleanser containing the Uniclay biotech ingredient improved the appearance of skin in women and men who are prone to acne after just one week. “Notably, redness and irregular texture were visibly reduced, with lasting effects observed even after participants stopped using the product,” the company said.

Lubrizol added that further findings from the study showed that the Uniclay Biotech ingredient was able to effectively reduce the size of facial pores, smooth rough skin texture, and reduce oil while strengthening the skin’s barrier function, which is essential for maintaining overall skin health.

Given the wealth of available data on the purifying and regenerative properties of the Uniclay Biotech ingredient, LLS Beauty believes it has the potential to transform the facial cleansing space.

To illustrate this, the company has developed a variety of rinse-off formulas containing active ingredients that care for the skin while cleansing the face. The first sample formulas contain ingredients such as the Uniclay Biotech ingredient, Xpozuki Biotech ingredient, Lipochroman molecule, and Actizyme advanced botanicals.

As a result, the Uniclay Biotech ingredient has been formulated in a high-performance facial cleanser (CL-F0113A EU) to reduce redness and pore size, and soothe the skin without sacrificing the formula’s foaming effects.

LLS Beauty has also used Uniclay’s biotech ingredients to formulate a clay-like mask cleanser (CL-F0120) that leaves the face clean and also helps reduce skin imperfections.
