Malaysia Imposes Anti-Dumping Duties on Chinese PET Imports, with a Maximum Rate of 37.4%

ECHEMI 2025-01-09

The Malaysian government has imposed provisional anti-dumping duties on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) imports from China and Indonesia, ranging from 6.3% to 37.4%. The move follows a complaint filed by Malaysian PET manufacturer Recron (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd., which argued that unfair pricing of PET by foreign manufacturers from China and Indonesia has caused a significant loss of market share and economic losses to the domestic PET industry in Malaysia.

The Malaysian Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) launched an investigation into the matter in August 2024. After reviewing the evidence, MITI concluded that the dumping allegations were substantiated, resulting in the imposition of provisional duties. These duties were implemented on January 7, 2025 and will last for up to 120 days. During this period, the government will continue its investigation and a final ruling is expected on May 6, 2025.

PET belongs to the polyester polymer family, which is widely recognized for its strength and stiffness. Due to its versatility, PET is used in a range of industries, from textiles to packaging. The material's use in the food and beverage industry and in manufacturing processes such as thermoforming makes it a key product in various supply chains. When combined with glass fibers, PET is also used as an engineering resin in a variety of industrial applications.
