Japan Approves GM Corn DP51291 for Food Safety Amid Global Acceptance

ECHEMI 2025-04-01

On March 13, 2025, the Japanese Consumer Affairs Agency announced the approval of genetically modified corn DP51291 following a thorough food safety review. Developed by Corteva Agriscience, this corn variety incorporates the IPD072Aa gene from Pseudomonas fluorescens, the PAT gene from Streptomyces viridochromogenes, and the PMI gene from Escherichia coli. These genetic modifications provide the corn with resistance to glyphosate and protection against corn rootworm.

DP51291 has already received approvals in several countries, including the United States, where it is authorized for use in both food and feed. Additionally, it has been approved for food use in Australia and New Zealand, while Canada has granted permission for food, feed, and cultivation.

This approval marks a significant step for genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in Japan, a country that has historically been cautious regarding biotech products. The acceptance of DP51291 could pave the way for broader adoption of GM crops, potentially enhancing agricultural productivity and addressing pest-related challenges in Japan's farming sector.

As the global landscape increasingly embraces biotechnology in agriculture, Japan's decision is seen as a critical move that aligns with international trends, reflecting a growing recognition of the benefits that GM crops can offer.
