SK Incheon Petrochemical supplies B30 marine biofuel for the first time in Korea
SK Incheon Petrochemical began supplying B30 marine fuel on April 26, blending its proprietary straight run fuel oil (SRFO) with 30% bio-based materials.
SK Incheon Petrochemical worked with JC Chemical and SK Innovation's research institutes to develop and verify the fuel blend, ensuring it complies with ISO 8217 standards.
According to the company, B30 blended marine fuel reduces carbon emissions by about 25% compared to existing marine fuels, and its demand is expected to continue to expand with the shipping industry's carbon neutrality policy.
In addition, the company explained that the fuel has obtained ISCC EU certification and meets the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) goal of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from fuel oil by 21% by 2030.
SK Incheon Petrochemical's SRFO is said to have high calorific value, high safety and low impurities, which will help improve the fuel efficiency of ships and reduce maintenance costs.
In the future, the Korean company plans to expand the marine fuel market in the West Sea region and around the world using this marine fuel blend.
Yoon Young-ho, head of B2B business at SK Incheon Petrochemical, said: "We will ensure that we can stably supply domestic and foreign shipping companies with next-generation fuel that is both environmentally friendly and high-quality. Bio-heavy fuel blended marine fuel is expected to become a sustainable energy transition model in response to greenhouse gas regulations in the shipping industry."
