Over 1,000 Tons of Plastic Waste Could Be Eliminated Yearly as Nippon Paint Launches Biodegradable Packaging

ECHEMI 2025-05-07

Nippon Paint has partnered with UK-based sustainable plastics innovator Polymateria to unveil a groundbreaking biodegradable packaging solution for its dry-mix mortar products, marking a significant leap in the construction industry’s fight against plastic pollution. This next-generation packaging uses cutting-edge biodegradation technology that allows plastic materials to break down naturally in open environments, leaving no microplastics or toxic residue behind.

The packaging is initially being applied to products such as smooth putty, which have traditionally relied on woven plastic sacks that are tough to recycle and often contribute to “white pollution.” The new solution provides a viable alternative that retains product performance while enabling the packaging to transform into biodegradable wax and then be fully decomposed by microorganisms in nature.

By replacing conventional plastic, the innovation can cut carbon emissions by around 30%. On an annual basis, it is expected to reduce over 1,000 tons of plastic waste across the industry. This move underscores Nippon Paint’s commitment to sustainable development and carbon neutrality, as the company continues to explore new materials like PCR (post-consumer recycled) plastics and paper-based alternatives, while also minimizing ink and solvent usage through lightweight packaging designs.

Recognized by the World Economic Forum as a technology pioneer, Polymateria contributes its dual-function material that is both recyclable and biodegradable, ensuring long-term environmental compatibility. Nippon Paint’s breakthrough not only enhances the eco-footprint of building materials but also positions the brand as a proactive leader in green innovation for packaging.
