AstraZeneca China Shakes Up Org Structure with 2 New Divisions and 3 Executive Exits in 4 Months

ECHEMI 2025-05-07

After a brief lull, AstraZeneca China has launched its largest organizational restructuring of 2025, signaling an aggressive pivot to strengthen its biopharmaceutical footprint. The changes, announced just four months into the year, are focused on realigning the Biopharmaceuticals Business Unit (BBU) to match global strategic directions and accelerate growth in respiratory, autoimmunity, and vaccine segments.

Two new departments have been formed: the Respiratory & Immunology Division (R&I) and the Vaccines & Immune Therapies Division (V&I). The R&I arm aims to defend the company’s leading inhalation portfolio while scaling up biologics to meet surging demand for advanced therapies in China. It includes COPD, asthma, and the dedicated Fasenra team. The V&I unit will drive growth of Beyfortus, a collaborative vaccine developed with Sanofi, and manage the joint venture with Chinese firm CanSinoBIO.

In parallel, a notable wave of leadership changes is underway. Yen Huaguo has been promoted to Assistant Vice President, now overseeing the Flying Eagle team and additional respiratory and digestive lines. Meanwhile, three senior executives are departing: Liu Qian (Respiratory and Digestive GM), Chen Xi (BBU VP), and Zhang Jing (AVP, set to retire in May). Chen, a key driver behind Fasenra and Beyfortus launches, had only joined in 2023 and was deeply involved in the BBU restructuring last year.

These updates follow AstraZeneca’s earlier oncology unit overhaul in January and reflect ongoing leadership renewal after Iskra Reic replaced Wang Lei as global EVP and international head last December.

Despite the turbulence, AstraZeneca continues to deliver. Its 2024 global revenue surged 21% to $54.07 billion, with China contributing a record-breaking $6.41 billion, or 12% of total sales. China now represents nearly half of the company’s emerging market revenue.

Looking ahead, AstraZeneca is pushing forward with its goal to launch 20 breakthrough medicines by 2030, with 10 of them driven by biopharma innovation. The latest restructuring shows AstraZeneca isn’t just reacting to change — it’s setting the pace.
