Kemira Expands Sodium Borohydride Powder Capacity in Finland

ECHEMI 2025-06-12

Kemira has made the investment decision to expand its sodium borohydride (SBH) powder capacity at its Äetsä site in Finland. The scope of the investment includes a new production line as well as some additional process safety improvements.

The total investment in the project is less than €10 million. The project will support the thriving global pharmaceutical industry in continental Europe as well as in export markets. SBH is a reducing agent commonly used in various pharmaceutical processes and product technologies for a wide range of active pharmaceutical ingredients. It is also used in many chemical manufacturing processes.

“We are seeing growing demand from our pharmaceutical customers in India and Europe. With this investment, we will more than double the drying capacity of the plant, allowing us to meet our customers’ needs and strengthen our local manufacturing base in Europe,” said Antti Matula, Executive Vice President of Kemira’s Fibers Basic Business.

The expansion project is currently in the engineering phase and the new production line will be fully operational in the fourth quarter of 2026.
