Kemira and Bluepha Collaborate to Promote PHA in Fully Bio-Based Barrier Coatings

Kemira and Bluepha have entered into a three-year strategic collaboration to promote the large-scale application of PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoates) in fully bio-based barrier coatings for paper, paperboard and molded fibers, contributing to sustainable packaging and the elimination of plastic waste.

Through this collaboration, Kemira and Bluepha will systematically introduce PHA materials into barrier coatings for paper such as food packaging, paper labels, paperboard and molded fibers, accelerating the traditional paper industry's transition to a low-carbon, sustainable future.

PHA-based waterborne barrier coatings are heat sealable and have excellent barrier properties to oil, water and grease. Other benefits include repulpability, which allows the paper to be recycled without special equipment, resulting in full fiber recycling. These properties further enhance the material’s sustainability, allowing brands to offer products that contribute to the circular economy and reduce the impact of plastic waste on the environment.

PHA barrier coatings are biodegradable in a variety of environments, including oceans, freshwater and soil. PHA coatings can replace polyethylene and provide a viable alternative to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). PFAS are also known as “forever chemicals” and are being phased out of food packaging around the world due to the health risks associated with their use. This development is consistent with the commitment Kemira has made and continues to make in the field of bio-based and sustainable technologies in other regions and markets around the world.
