Ineos Invests £30m to Reduce Emissions at Hull Site by 75%

ECHEMI 2025-07-22

Ineos has completed a major £30m (€34.6m) investment in its Hull manufacturing facility to switch to the clean fuel hydrogen instead of natural gas. The move will reduce carbon emissions by 75%, equivalent to removing around 160,000 petrol cars from the road. This furthers Ineos’ net zero commitment, well ahead of its 2050 target.

The investment is part of Ineos’ wider strategy to decarbonise its operations in the UK and Europe. Ineos Acetyls is Europe’s only industrial-scale producer of acetic acid, acetic anhydride and ethyl acetate. These products are essential chemicals in everyday life, from pharmaceuticals to clean water. As a result of the switch to hydrogen, the Saltend site is now producing significantly lower emissions.

David Brooks, CEO of INEOS Acetyls, said: “We have invested £30 million in Hull to do good things – reduce emissions, clean up the site and future-proof our operations. We have already reduced our CO2 emissions by 75%. This was not a plan, it was a result.”

The investment will deliver a transformational and significant improvement in the site’s product carbon footprint, which is already world-leading.

The hydrogen used at the site is a by-product of existing production processes, a smart and efficient use of existing resources. INEOS believes this model can be replicated across the industry.

The Hull upgrade is one of several major decarbonisation projects underway at INEOS sites including Grangemouth and Cologne as the company works to meet and exceed its climate targets.

Ineos Acetyls has over 500 employees globally. In Hull, the company directly employs over 300 people and supports hundreds more through its supply chain.
