Clariant and Shanghai Electric Partner to Advance Biomass-Based Green Methanol in China
Clariant has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Shanghai Boiler Works, a subsidiary of Shanghai Electric, to jointly advance sustainable energy technologies in China. The partnership builds on their successful collaboration at Shanghai Electric’s new biomass-to-green methanol plant in Taonan, Jilin Province.
Clariant supplied its high-performance MegaMax® catalysts and provided technical support during the commissioning of the 50,000-ton/year facility. The project’s second phase—targeting 200,000 tons of green methanol and 10,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) annually—is slated to begin operations in 2027.
The agreement, signed at the Clariant Innovation Center in Frankfurt, enables joint R&D, engineering design, equipment supply, and turnkey project development. Clariant will contribute its catalyst expertise in green methanol, electromethanol, green ammonia, SAF production, and gas purification. Shanghai Electric brings advanced process technology and plant design capabilities.
Georg Anfang, Vice President at Clariant, emphasized the company’s commitment to enabling clean energy and fuel production. Qiu Jiayou, Vice President at Shanghai Electric, highlighted the shared vision for sustainable innovation and global impact.
Shanghai Electric is a global leader in energy and industrial solutions, with a focus on power generation, smart manufacturing, and automation.
