Evonik Completes Shift to Green Electricity for Polybutadiene Production at its Marl, Germany, Plant

ECHEMI 2025-08-01

Evonik Industries AG will fully transition its polybutadiene production site in Marl, Germany, to green electricity starting July 1, 2025. This move is a key component of the company's sustainability strategy for the Coatings and Adhesive Resins business line, which aims to achieve its environmental goal of reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon emissions by 25% by 2030 compared to 2021 levels.

This energy transition, which involves two POLYVEST® production facilities at the Marl plant, marks a significant step forward for Evonik in promoting sustainable polybutadiene manufacturing. Evonik has already transitioned all POLYVEST® grades to eCO versions that comply with the ISCC PLUS standard. These mass-balance certified products demonstrate the company's long-term commitment to responsible production.

The POLYVEST® family of liquid polybutadiene products, designed based on a variety of chemical structures, exhibits highly reactive properties due to its unique microstructure and is widely used in the automotive, construction, and electronics sectors. Saskia Jaworski, Sustainability Manager at Evonik, said: "By using green electricity, we not only contribute to our own emissions reductions but also support our customers on their path to net zero. This low carbon footprint itself is a key value proposition of our products."

In addition, Evonik plans to implement several renewable energy power purchase agreements (PPAs) starting in 2025, further strengthening its strategic presence in green energy. These initiatives contribute to the company's continued transformation towards a greener and more efficient production model.
