Axplora Expands Indian Market: €6.5 Million to Expand API Manufacturing in Vizag

ECHEMI 2025-08-07

Axplora, a global pharmaceutical raw material supplier, recently announced an additional €6.5 million investment in its active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturing facility in Vizag, Andhra Pradesh, India. This strategic investment aims to expand the site's production capacity and supply chain resilience, further strengthening the company's global supply capabilities in the high-value pharmaceutical raw materials sector.

Regulatory Compliance Lays the Foundation for Expansion

This investment builds on the excellent regulatory compliance record of Axplora's Indian manufacturing sites. In the first half of 2025, both the Vizag and Chennai sites, operated by the company's PharmaZell business unit, passed US FDA GMP on-site inspections with zero major defects and received Voluntary Action Instruction (VAI) certification. Regulators specifically noted the Chennai facility's outstanding performance in the following areas:

  • Modernized quality system management in compliance with 21 CFR standards
  • Effective implementation of an electronic document management system
  • Continuous process validation throughout the product lifecycle
  • Strategic layout deepens vertical integration

The Vizag site expansion project will achieve three strategic objectives:

  • Capacity expansion: Two new high-potency API production lines will be added to meet the customized needs of global innovative pharmaceutical companies
  • Employment creation: 120 new professional and technical positions are expected to be created, strengthening the local talent pool
  • Green production: The carbon footprint of the single site will be reduced by 15% through the upgrade of the reaction solvent recovery system

Axplora Group CEO, Martin Meeson, emphasized: "As a key node in the global pharmaceutical supply chain, India has always been at the core of our 'global presence, local service' strategy. The upgrade of the Vizag site will significantly enhance our ability to respond quickly to customers in Europe, the United States, and emerging markets."

Industry analysts point out that this investment comes at a critical time when the global API supply chain is undergoing restructuring. By strengthening Axplora's production capacity in India, Axplora can mitigate geopolitical risks while leveraging India's mature chemical synthesis talent pool to provide more cost-competitive, compliant products to global customers. The company plans to complete GMP certification for the first batch of new production capacity in Q2 2026.
