BASF Technology with CFRP Lands in Nanjing: High-Performance Dispersant Production Line Officially Commissioned

BASF’s high-performance dispersant production line at the Nanjing Jiangbei New Materials Science and Technology Park was officially commissioned on November 25. The new facility introduces Controlled Free Radical Polymerization (CFRP) technology, enabling localized production of advanced dispersants and further strengthening the company’s technological presence and supply capabilities in China and the Asia-Pacific region.

BASF is a leader in the use of CFRP technology for producing high-performance dispersants both domestically and internationally. As a core process for high-end dispersants, CFRP can significantly improve pigment dispersion efficiency, color reproduction, and system stability, making it a “low-profile yet critical” functional material in high-end applications such as industrial coatings, automotive coatings, inks, and composite materials.

With the new production line now in operation, Chinese customers will gain faster and more stable access to high-performance dispersants to meet continuously upgrading performance and quality demands.

At the commissioning ceremony, Dr. Stephan Kothrade, Chief Technology Officer of BASF, stated: “The new plant will establish a stable local supply to meet the rapidly growing demand from the industrial coatings and automotive sectors. Leveraging CFRP technology and advanced production processes, the Nanjing plant will provide low-carbon footprint products to Asian customers, supporting the green transition.”

This expansion is a key step in optimizing BASF’s global supply system. Nanjing and Helmond, Netherlands, will form a collaborative production network, enhancing both supply stability and responsiveness to market changes. Mr. Gopal Pillai, President of BASF Global Operations, noted that the dual-site model will offer customers greater flexibility and more reliable delivery.

In the context of increasing domestic competition and a highly competitive global chemical market, the localized application of high-value technologies such as CFRP enables BASF to maintain technological leadership and strengthen its service capabilities in high-end markets. Mr. Sylvain Huguenard, Vice President of Global Additives Business Management, stated: “Deploying advanced technologies locally helps us provide customers with more competitive, high-performance solutions.”

Since 2005, BASF’s Nanjing site has been one of its largest integrated chemical production bases in China. Through multiple rounds of expansion, it has gradually developed into a comprehensive production center covering petrochemicals, intermediates, additives, and high-performance materials. This expansion not only increases production capacity but also signifies the company’s further shift toward “localization, high value-added, and strong technological support” in the high-end additives sector.

China is one of the most critical growth engines in BASF’s global strategy. On the occasion of its 140th anniversary of entering the Chinese market, the commissioning of the new Nanjing plant once again demonstrates the company’s long-term commitment to China and will continue to support innovation, upgrading, and sustainable development of the local industrial chain.
