Hormuz Crisis Exposes India’s Agrochemical “First Mile”
India’s crop protection industry is facing a “first-mile” raw-material problem as the Hormuz crisis disrupts petrochemical inputs, according to recent AgroPages-linked industry commentary. The issue is not India’s ability to formulate or manufacture downstream products, but its dependence on imported petrochemical intermediates, technical-grade active ingredients and upstream chemical feedstocks.
This distinction matters. India has become highly competitive in agrochemical technicals and formulations, but many base inputs still depend on global energy and chemical flows. A strong downstream industry can still be vulnerable if the first chemical step is exposed.
The crisis reportedly affects solvents, polymers, packaging and intermediates, all of which are essential for crop protection production and distribution. If these inputs rise in cost or become harder to secure, manufacturers may face margin pressure, delayed shipments or reduced flexibility in pricing.
For global buyers, the lesson is that supply-chain resilience cannot be measured only at the formulation level. It must include feedstocks, intermediates, energy, packaging and logistics. India’s agrochemical industry remains strong, but Hormuz has exposed where the pressure points still sit.
