Bullish and Bearish Factors Keep Formic Acid Market Trading in a Sideways Range

ECHEMI 2026-10-20

October 19th News

According to the commodity market analysis system: Recently, the overall Chinese formic acid market has maintained a sideways fluctuation pattern. As of October 19th, the benchmark price of formic acid is 2,100 CNY/ton, unchanged from last week. Bullish and bearish factors are in a tug-of-war, and the market lacks the momentum to break out upward or downward, resulting in a generally weak trading atmosphere.

Supply and demand performance is weak.

Last week, the downstream demand for formic acid in China was weak, with a lack of large purchase orders. Transactions were mainly supported by scattered and essential needs from downstream. Downstream companies have limited acceptance of the current formic acid prices, and their purchasing strategies remain cautious, mostly replenishing stocks as needed in small quantities, without any intention to actively stock up. The insufficient volume of terminal orders directly constrained the scale of market transactions. The overall performance of product sales by manufacturers was mediocre, and the inventory situations of different factories varied: some factories had a slower shipping pace, and the inventory pressure gradually became apparent; other manufacturers maintained their inventories within a reasonable range, with relatively manageable inventory pressure.

Stable Operations on the Raw Materials Side

This week, there were no significant fluctuations in raw material prices. The cost side neither strongly supported nor significantly dragged down the formic acid prices, maintaining a stable cost situation that is unlikely to drive a trend in formic acid market. On the supply side, overall production remains relatively stable. Chinese formic acid companies have no plans for concentrated maintenance or major adjustments in production, and the supply of spot goods in the market remains stable. There have been no extreme situations of either shortage or a sudden surge in supply, further consolidating the foundation for the formic acid market to remain in a sideways trend.

Market sentiment remains predominantly cautious

Downstream users are mainly observing, not chasing high prices or stockpiling; on the one hand, production enterprises are unwilling to publicly lower their quotes to avoid triggering panic selling in the market, and on the other hand, they are offering moderate discounts in actual transactions to promote sales in the face of weak demand. Traders are also becoming more conservative, purchasing as needed and reducing inventory in the middle stages, with speculative demand in the market virtually absent. The market is in a stalemate due to the tug-of-war between bulls and bears.

Overall, the current market demand is weak, with no significant positive news. In the short term, the formic acid market in China is likely to continue its stalemate situation. Specific developments will still need to monitor changes in supply and demand.
