Wanhua Chemical won a prize for MDI related technology

Recently, the American Chemical Week 2021 Sustainability Award was announced. Wanhua Chemical's HCI green recycling technology was shortlisted for best recycling practice cases. This is the first time that a Chinese company has been shortlisted for this award.

Wanhua Chemical's innovative HCI catalytic oxidation technology has realized the "chlorine" in the isocyanate production process from the open-loop consumption to the closed-loop cycle. The technology adopts the world's first non-precious metal catalyst and fluidized bed process, which is directly converted after catalytic treatment under relatively mild conditions, and refined to obtain high-purity chlorine products. The process has the advantages of high reaction efficiency, green environmental protection, low investment and operating costs.

In the previous process of isocyanate production, chlorine was only used as an active carrier, and eventually all of it was produced in the form of by-product HCl. The by-product HCI cannot be used directly, and the utilization rate of "chlorine" is almost zero. The usual methods for processing by-product HCI in the industry are lye neutralization and water absorption to produce hydrochloric acid. For a long time, the handling of by-product HCI has become a problem that restricts the development of the industry.

The HCl oxidation reaction converts HCl into chlorine for recycling, which can form an atomic economy reaction system. The common technologies are hydrochloric acid electrolysis, ion-exchange membrane electrolysis of salt water, and catalytic oxidation.

Wanhua Chemical uses HCI green recycling technology to fundamentally solve the problems of low added value of by-product hydrochloric acid in the chlorine-consuming industry, difficult sales and environmental pollution, and at the same time provide the chlorine-consuming industry with a more economical and green source of chlorine raw materials.
