Increased production capacity, the largest MDI producer in China

Wanhua Chemical was born in 1978 as a synthetic leather factory in Yantai. At that time, Wanhua Chemical had no technology and no capital, and its management was chaotic.

In order to realize the instruction of "Chinese people can have a pair of leather shoes", in 1984, Wanhua Synthetic Leather Factory introduced a backward 10,000-ton MDI plant from Japan.

Since then, Wanhua Chemical has become the first MDI manufacturer in China. Due to the extremely complicated production process of MDI itself, only Wanhua Chemical has achieved a breakthrough in China in the past 20 years. In order to break the foreign monopoly on MDI technology, Wanhua Chemical hired university students and postgraduates and set up its own R&D team to try to master MDI technology though.

At the beginning of 1996, Wanhua Chemical's 15,000 tonnes MDI equipment was successfully produced on a trial basis, which made China the fifth country with independent intellectual property rights in MDI after Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom and Japan.

In 2021, Wanhua Chemical completed the 1.1 million tonnes/year capacity expansion of its Yantai MDI plant. Compared with the industry's common single-unit capacity of around 400,000 tonnes/year, Wanhua's expanded plant was the first in the world to successfully achieve a single-unit capacity of 1.1 million tonnes/year, resulting in a further increase in production capacity and a significant year-on-year increase in the output and sales of major products.

Nowadays, the global MDI production capacity is close to 10 million tons, and Wanhua Chemical's MDI production capacity can reach 2.6 million tons, accounting for nearly 30% of the global market share, making it the world's largest MDI manufacturer.
