Major breakthroughs to realize mercury-free production of polyvinyl chloride

Polyvinyl chloride is an important chemical raw material, but its production mode based on MERCURY catalyst has brought serious pollution to the environment. Therefore, many countries in the world are competing to tackle key problems, trying to develop mercury-free catalyst to realize mercury-free production of polyvinyl chloride. This problem has recently been overcome by Chinese scientists to find a nano-carbon catalytic material. Relevant results have recently been published in the Journal Nature-Communication in the form of research reports. This study laid a good foundation for the development of mercury-free catalyst and opened up a new way for the final mercury-free production of polyvinyl chloride. The project is supported by the "973" project of the Ministry of Science and Technology and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Researcher Pan Xiulian, Dalian Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and research group led by Bao Xin and academician have made significant breakthroughs in this direction. On the basis of in-depth research on nano-carbon catalytic materials, they fabricated nano-carbon structures at their interfaces by precisely controlling the treatment process of SiC materials, and realized in-situ doping of Nitrogen atoms in carbon structures by ammoniation and other methods. The nitrogen-doped graphene-like material formed on the surface of silicon carbide shows excellent direct catalytic performance for hydrochlorination of acetylene.
