The Global Pharmaceutical Innovation Index is released!
A few days ago, IDEA Pharma, a British pharmaceutical consulting company, released the 2022 Pharmaceutical Innovation Index and Pharmaceutical Invention Index rankings. Pfizer and AstraZeneca won the top two rankings respectively. BeiGene is the only innovation in China to be shortlisted in the two index lists. Pharmaceutical companies ranked sixth in the pharmaceutical innovation index and seventh in the pharmaceutical invention index. In addition, there are four new pharmaceutical companies on the list, namely BioNTech, UCB, Horizon Pharmaceuticals and Shionogi.
The Pharmaceutical Innovation Index released by IDEA Pharma focuses on how long it takes for a company to obtain regulatory approval for a therapy. The Pharmaceutical Invention Index focuses on the breadth and depth of pharmaceutical companies' R&D pipelines, as well as the novelty of the treatments under development in the R&D pipelines.
According to the statistics of IDEA Pharma, the 32 companies shortlisted in the two index lists will have a total global revenue of US$884 billion in 2021, of which R&D investment will be US$163 billion, accounting for 18% of the revenue. These companies have 23 new molecular entities and nine biologics approved in 2021, at an average cost of $5.1 billion to launch a new drug. There are also more than 2,300 clinical trials in progress involving 1,300 new drugs.
