In terms of polarity, which one of these solvents is the best solvent for the recrystallization of Fluorene and why? The solvents are water, methanol, and toulene.
Fluorene is a hydrocarbon and would be very insoluble in water which excludes this as a solvent. I would think that it would be too soluble in toluene. Therefore, the methanol would be the best of the three solvents you mention. I might add that the chemist usually experiments with a variety of solvents and mixed solvents before choosing a suitable one for a a particular solute.
