Below is the reaction of a solution of magnesium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid:

Mg(OH)₂ + 2 HCl -> MgCl₂ + 2 H₂O

The products from the reaction of magnesium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid are magnesium chloride and water. This reaction happens in people’s stomachs when they consume milk of magnesia in antacids to eliminate the heartburn (the irritation of esophagus by the hydrochloric acid from the stomach).

As magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2) is a base, and hydrochloric acid (HCl) is an acid, this would be a neutralisation with the chemical equation

Mg(OH)2 + 2HCl = MgCl2 + H2O

In neutralisation reactions, hydroxide anions from the base and hydrogen cations from the acid will usually bond to form water, with what remains usually formung a salt (in this example MgCl2)
