Magnesium virtually has no reaction with cold water. It reacts slowly with hot water to give hydrogen gas and white magnesium hydroxide, which is only slightly soluble in water. Hydrogen gas is given out in the reaction.

Magnesium + water �> magnesium hydroxide solution + hydrogen
Mg(s) + 2H2O(l)>Mg(OH)2(s)+H2(g)

The balanced chemical equation:

Mg(s) + H2SO4(aq) → MgSO4(aq) + H2(g)

Mg + H2O → MgO + H2

This is the reaction of magnesium with steam, but magnesium has a slightly reaction with cold water to form magnesium hydroxide.

Mg + 2H2O → Mg(OH)2 + H2

How are crystals of magnesium sulphate made using magnesium oxide powder and sulphuric acid as reactants?

MgO dissolves in water to make Mg(OH)₂, which reacts with H₂SO₄ to make MgSO₄ and H₂O.
Evaporate the water and you get MgSO₄ crystals.
