What is the common name of butanoic acid?
Hiya, the IUPAC name is butanoic acid, but the systemic (common) name is butyric acid, which is derived from the Latin term ‘butyrum’, meaning butter, as the compound was first discovered in rancid butter. Other chemical names include 1-propanecarboxylic acid and propane carboxylic acid.

Make the Grignard reagent of propyl bromide with magnesium (to make CH3CH2CH2MgBr) and then react it with carbon dioxide.

There is probably some eloquent way to do this in like one step but here is my scheme:
CH3CH2COOH + LAH → CH3CH2CH2OH
CH3CH2CH2OH + PBr3 → CH3CH2CH2Br
CH3CH2CH2Br + Mg → CH3CH2CH2MgBr
CH3CH2CH2MgBr + CO2 → CH3CH2CH2COOH
