What is the reaction between sodium hydroxide and silver nitrate?
While the other answers to this question seem reasonable, they are not correct. The reaction of sodium hydroxide and silver nitrate do not lead to the formation of silver hydroxide:
AgNO3 + NaOH → AgOH + NaNO3
rather the correct reaction is:
2AgNO3 + 2NaOH → Ag2O + 2NaNO3
So, the products are silver oxide and sodium nitrate. The formation of AgOH may occur but it is an intermediate. The ‘H’ of AgOH is acidic and in the presence of NaOH will be deprotonated to give
AgOH + NaOH → AgO(1-) + Na+ + H2O
The AgO(1-) will react with another silver ion and give Ag2O
