Polycystic kidney disease in children
Polycystic kidney (PK) is a diffuse distribution of numerous cysts containing urine-like fluid in the renal cortex and medulla. There are two genetic forms. One is autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, which usually shows symptoms in adulthood, but can also show symptoms in newborns. In the past, this type has been called adult PK. The other is autosomal recessive inheritance, which was called infantile PK in the past. Symptoms appear at birth and may even cause death in the neonatal period, but in recent years it has been found that this type can also be seen in adults. The former type is more common, about 12 to 24 times the latter type.
