Subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord
Subacute combined degeneration, also known as vitamin B12 neuropathy, is caused by vitamin B12 deficiency. It is more common in adults over 40 years old. Both men and women can be affected. Slowly progressive degeneration mainly occurs in the posterior cord, lateral cord and peripheral nerves of the spinal cord. Clinically, it presents with progressive sensory ataxia, spastic paralysis, deep sensory disturbances and signs of peripheral nerve damage, and is often accompanied by pernicious anemia and achlorhydria.
