Meckels diverticulum is a diverticulum of the distal ileum formed by incomplete degeneration of the yolk duct during embryonic development. It is usually asymptomatic clinically, and is often diagnosed only when complications of the diverticulum occur. In 1808, Meckel first discovered that the diverticulum originated from the remnants of the yolk duct. In 1812, he gave a complete description of its embryological and clinical manifestations and complications, so the disease was named Meckels diverticulum. This disease is occasionally complicated by other malformations, such as omphalocele, intestinal malrotation, intestinal duplication, ectopic pancreas and congenital heart disease. Ehrensperger pointed out that the incidence of concomitant malformations can be as high as 8.4%.
