Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in the elderly
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a heart disease of unknown cause characterized by asymmetric and uneven hypertrophy of the myocardium and a reduction in the size of the ventricular cavity. In typical cases, the hypertrophy of the ventricular septum is much more obvious than that of the free wall, causing stenosis of the left ventricular outflow tract, so it is also called primary hypertrophic subaortic stenosis (IHSS). The basic abnormal change is left ventricular diastolic dysfunction and obstructed blood filling. HCM mainly occurs in middle-aged and young people, and familial incidence is more common. However, in recent years, the incidence of the disease in the elderly has gradually increased. Among a group of 44 patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in China, those over 60 years old accounted for 36.3%.
