Persistent cholestatic jaundice of the newborn
Infant cholestasis refers to a persistent reduction in infant bile secretion due to liver cell damage and/or intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile duct obstruction. The main clinical manifestations are hyperconjugated hyperbilirubinemia [i.e., blood direct bilirubin >25.5µmol/L (1.5mg/dl), or direct-to-total bile duct ratio >20%], hepatosplenomegaly, abnormal liver function, and fat malabsorption. Some people call this syndrome infantile hepatitis syndrome, but since the cases included do not all have pathological changes of hepatitis, this name deserves further discussion. This article mainly discusses cholestasis that occurs within 3 months after birth.
