Subcutaneous emphysema of the chest wall
When gas accumulates in the subcutaneous tissue of the chest, it is called subcutaneous emphysema. Subcutaneous emphysema of the chest wall is generally secondary to sternum and (or) rib fractures with pneumothorax, especially in patients with multiple rib fractures and tension pneumothorax. It can also be complicated by trachea, bronchus, lung and esophagus injuries, and occasionally secondary to endoscopic examination injuries.
