Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura in children
Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is an autoimmune disease caused by the production of antiplatelet antibodies in the body, which leads to the phagocytosis and destruction of platelets by the reticuloendothelial system, resulting in thrombocytopenia. It is a common hemorrhagic disease in children. Clinically, it is divided into two subtypes: acute and chronic. Its basic characteristics are spontaneous bleeding of the skin and mucous membranes, thrombocytopenia, prolonged bleeding time, poor clot contraction, and increased vascular fragility. Bone marrow smears show normal or increased number of megakaryocytes and differentiation disorders. It is also called autoimmune thrombocytopenic purpura.
