Pneumococcal meningitis in children
Pneumococcal meningitis is more common in infancy and can also occur in newborns. It is sporadic and is more common in winter and spring. The incidence of pneumococcal meningitis is second only to epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis. It is often followed by upper respiratory tract infection, otitis media, pneumonia, sinusitis, mastoiditis, sepsis and craniocerebral trauma. In about 20% of cases, no primary lesion can be found.
