Acute radiation thyroiditis
Acute radiothyroiditis refers to inflammation of the thyroid gland that occurs within two weeks after acute radiation. Normally, the thyroid gland is less sensitive to the direct effects of radiation, but the thyroid gland in a proliferative state is more sensitive to radiation. Therefore, the thyroid gland of minors and patients with hyperthyroidism is more sensitive to radiation and is prone to thyroiditis.
