Giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB) is often called benign giant cell tumor of bone or osteoclastoma. It is one of the more common primary bone tissue tumors. Giant cell tumor of bone is a benign bone lesion, usually solitary and locally invasive. Some people also believe that giant cell tumor of bone is a potentially malignant tumor. This tumor is neither completely benign nor completely malignant, but between these two extremes. Its degree of invasiveness varies. Some giant cell tumors can be controlled for a long time after relatively simple surgery, while some giant cell tumors can spread and metastasize. In the surgical staging system for bone tumors proposed by the American Musculoskeletal Tumor Society in 1980, giant cell tumor of bone was officially listed as a low-grade malignant tumor.
