Potassium iodide tablets

Function and Efficacy

This product is an iodine supplement. Potassium iodide can have two effects on thyroid function depending on the dosage. 1. When preventing and treating endemic (simple) goiter, a small dose of iodine preparation is given as a raw material for iodine to synthesize thyroxine, correct the original excessive secretion of pituitary thyrotropin, and shrink the enlarged thyroid gland. 2. Large doses of iodine are used as antithyroid drugs to temporarily control hyperthyroidism. This may be achieved by inhibiting thyroglobulin hydrolase, preventing the release of free thyroid hormone into the blood, and the effect is fast and strong, but not lasting. It temporarily inhibits the synthesis of thyroid hormones, and the inhibitory effect may disappear after continuous administration, resulting in more severe hyperthyroidism symptoms. Therefore, it is only used for thyroid crisis to quickly improve symptoms, and must be used in conjunction with thiourea.
