Magnesium Sulfate Injection
Function and Efficacy
Magnesium ions can inhibit the activity of the central nervous system, inhibit the release of acetylcholine at the motor nerve-muscle junction, block conduction at the neuromuscular junction, reduce or relieve muscle contraction, and at the same time have a dilating effect on vascular smooth muscle, dilate spasmodic peripheral blood vessels, and lower blood pressure. Therefore, it has a preventive and therapeutic effect on eclampsia. It also has an inhibitory effect on uterine smooth muscle contraction and can be used to treat premature delivery.
Ingredients
The main ingredient of this product is magnesium sulfate. Molecular formula: MgSO47H2O Molecular weight: 246.48

Appearance
This product is a colorless transparent liquid.
Indication
It can be used as an anticonvulsant. It is often used for hypertension during pregnancy. It lowers blood pressure, treats pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, and is also used to treat premature labor.
Usage and Dosage
1. The first dose for the treatment of moderate to severe pregnancy-induced hypertension, preeclampsia and eclampsia is 2.5-4g. After diluting with 20ml of 25% glucose injection, slowly inject it intravenously within 5 minutes, and then maintain it by intravenous drip of 1-2g every hour. The total amount for 24 hours is 30g, which is monitored based on knee tendon reflex, respiratory rate and urine volume. 2. The dosage and method for the treatment of premature birth are similar to those for the treatment of pregnancy-induced hypertension. The first loading dose is 4g; after diluting with 20ml of 25% glucose injection, slowly inject it intravenously within 5 minutes, and then use 60ml of 25% magnesium sulfate injection, add it to 1000ml of 5% glucose injection and drip it intravenously at a rate of 2g per hour until 2 hours after uterine contractions stop. After that, take oral adrenal receptor agonists to maintain it. 3. Intramuscular or intravenous medication for the treatment of convulsions in children: 0.1-0.15g/kg each time, dilute this product into 1% solution with 5%-10% glucose injection, drip it intravenously or dilute it into 5% solution, and slowly inject it intravenously. 25% solution can be injected deeply into the muscle. Generally, pediatrics only use intramuscular or intravenous injections, which is safe.
Adverse Reactions
1 Intravenous injection of magnesium sulfate often causes symptoms such as flushing, sweating, and dry mouth. Rapid intravenous injection can cause nausea, vomiting, palpitations, dizziness, and nystagmus in some cases. The symptoms can disappear if the injection speed is slowed down. 2 In patients with renal insufficiency and large dosages, blood magnesium accumulation may occur. When the blood magnesium concentration reaches 5mmol/L, muscle excitability may be inhibited, sensory reactions may be sluggish, knee tendon reflexes may disappear, and breathing may begin to be inhibited. When the blood magnesium concentration reaches 6mmol/L, respiratory arrest and arrhythmia may occur, and heart conduction block may occur. Further increase in concentration may cause heart arrest. 3 Continuous use of magnesium sulfate can cause constipation, and some patients may develop paralytic intestinal obstruction, which improves after drug withdrawal. 4 Very few patients have decreased blood calcium and reappear hypocalcemia. 5 Magnesium ions can freely pass through the placenta, causing neonatal hypermagnesemia, which is manifested as low muscle tone, poor sucking ability, inactivity, and soft crying. A few have respiratory depression. 6 A small number of pregnant women have pulmonary edema.
