Function and Efficacy
Pharmacology and Toxicology Iodine is the main raw material for the synthesis of thyroid hormone by the thyroid gland, so sodium iodide [131I] can be taken up and concentrated by the thyroid follicular epithelium. The amount of uptake and the speed of synthesizing thyroid hormone are related to thyroid function. The thyroid function is determined by measuring the thyroid uptake rate of 131I in vitro after oral administration of this product for 2, 4, and 24 hours using a thyroid function meter. 24 hours after oral administration of this product, most of the 131I has been excreted in the urine, and the part remaining in the body is almost all concentrated in the functional thyroid tissue. Therefore, this product is a highly specific imaging agent for functional thyroid tissue. Larger doses of 131I can destroy thyroid tissue and reduce the formation of thyroid hormone, achieving the purpose of treating hyperthyroidism. Larger doses of 131I are suitable for the treatment of thyroid cancer resection, especially papillary carcinoma metastatic lesions. After being absorbed, iodine [131I] enters the blood, and under normal circumstances, 10% to 25% is taken up by the thyroid gland. Iodide in the thyroid gland and iodide in the blood can be freely exchanged, and the concentration in the thyroid gland can reach 25 to 500 times the plasma concentration. The intake can be increased by stimulation of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and abnormal thyroid stimulants. Most of the iodine is involved in the synthesis of thyroxine in the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland needs about 70-100 mu;g of iodine to synthesize thyroid hormones every day.

Indication
It is mainly used for the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid diseases and the preparation of iodine [131I] labeled compounds.
Usage and Dosage
1. Thyroid iodine uptake [131I] test: 74-370 kBq (2-10 μCi) orally on an empty stomach; 2. Thyroid imaging: 1.85-3.7 MBq (50-100 μCi) orally on an empty stomach; 3. Treatment of thyroid disease: generally 2590-3700 kBq (70-100 μCi)/g of thyroid tissue or as directed by a doctor.
Adverse Reactions
.1. Most patients have no adverse reactions after iodine [131I] treatment of hyperthyroidism. A few have mild reactions such as fatigue, loss of appetite, and nausea within a week, which usually disappear within a few days. After taking iodine [131I], the radiation damages the thyroid tissue and releases a large amount of thyroid hormone into the blood. About 2 weeks after taking iodine [131I], the symptoms of hyperthyroidism may be aggravated. Some patients may even develop thyroid crisis. The reason may be that a large amount of thyroid hormone is released into the blood under the action of ionizing radiation, as well as mental stimulation, infection, etc. 2. The most important complication of iodine [131I] treatment of hyperthyroidism is permanent hypothyroidism. The longer the time after treatment, the higher the incidence rate. The incidence rate in foreign countries increases by about 2%-3% each year, and in my country it is about 1.0%. 3. Iodine [131I] treatment of thyroid cancer metastasis may cause the following adverse reactions due to the large dose: gastrointestinal reactions (nausea and vomiting), transient bone marrow suppression, radiation sialadenitis, and acute thyroid crisis. About 3 days after treatment, neck pain and swelling, pain when swallowing, throat pain and cough may occur, and painkillers are often not effective. Temporary hair loss may occur 2 to 3 months after treatment.
Precautions
Children, pregnant or lactating women, and patients with acute myocardial infarction or acute hepatitis.

Storage
Place in a lead container and keep it airtight. The radiation level on the surface of the lead container should meet the requirements.
