Things you need to know about Pyrethrin

Pyrethrin is a widely used plant-derived insecticide from the pyrethrum plant (Tanacetum cinerariifolium) of the Asteraceae family, and is the main component of the essential oil of pyrethrum flowers. At present, natural extraction from pyrethrum is still the main production method of Pyrethrins, however, the cultivation of pyrethrum is more obviously affected by the altitude, soil and temperature, and the global production is only 0.8 million tonnes per year, while the demand for natural Pyrethrins has exceeded 21,000 tonnes, which is a serious shortage of supply .Although industrial synthetic analogues of Pyrethrins are produced at relatively low prices and on a large scale, with output of more than 50,000 tonnes per year, this is accompanied by chemical synthesis-induced environmental pollution, non-renewable energy consumption and environmental residues of Pyrethrins that are not easily degraded, as well as soaring prices for synthetic precursors due to excessively rapid growth in demand. Although some plant-derived insecticides are currently in use, Pyrethrins are still the most widely used plant-derived insecticides in the world.

Pyrethrum originated in Croatia, in the early 19th century in Western Europe, the United States and other places people found the special insecticidal properties of pyrethrum, the product is mainly used as a household insecticide. the late 19th century into Japan, to the 1930s Japan in the planting of production is in a monopoly position. After the Second World War, East African countries took over most of the world's pyrethrum production, of which Kenya is the world's main producer of pyrethrum, whose pyrethrum production accounted for 70% to 90% of the global production. With the continuous development of human society, the concept of green and sustainable development has gradually taken shape, and natural Pyrethrins became a widely used alternative to agricultural pesticides at the beginning of the twentieth century, and played an important role in resisting insect infestation.

Pyrethrins are widely used for the control of pests of domestic, agro-horticultural, food storage, medical and veterinary importance, and are effective against a wide range of insect species, including Lepidoptera (cabbage loopers and sticklebacks), Diptera (houseflies), Hymenoptera, Homoptera (aphids), Coleoptera (cockroaches), Thoracopterygii, Hemiptera (bedbugs ), Cyclopterygii, Dictyostelidae, Coma (Thrips occidentalis) of the Insecta, as well as the arachnid ticks and hard ticks.Pyrethrins have the advantage of being non-toxic to bees and butterflies and have relatively low toxicity to mammals and humans. According to the USEPA and WHO, the LD50 for naturalPyrethrins in rats is 700 mg/kg, while the LD50 for synthetic cypermethrin and deltamethrin are 247 mg/kg and 128 mg/kg, respectively.AlthoughPyrethrins are toxic to fish, they are less toxic than Pyrethrins AlthoughPyrethrins are toxic to fish, they are less toxic than Pyrethrins.
